What to Expect: Football Games, Competitions & Events

Being part of the Mighty Marching Pirates is a commitment—but it’s also an unforgettable experience filled with music, teamwork, travel, and tons of fun. Here's a breakdown of what to expect throughout the season, from the stands to the field.

Football Games

(Fridays – August to October)

At every home and away game, the band plays a vital role in school spirit and halftime entertainment.

What Students Do:

  • Wear full marching uniform (sometimes blue band shirts, and black shorts in early season)
  • March into the stadium together
  • Sit as a group in the band section (no guests allowed)
  • Play stand tunes, cheers, and often perform the halftime field show
  • Get a free meal from our concession stand during home games

Parent Reminders:

  • Volunteers needed:
  • Home Games: Concession Stand, field staff, hospitality, trailer puller.
  • Away Games: Bus Chaperones, Trailer Puller, Field Staff
  • Bring your spirit! Sit near the 50-yard line for the best view
  • Wear your band shirt or school colors
  • Games typically run 3–4 hours, including post-game wrap-up

Marching Competitions

(Saturdays – October & early November)

These are the “game days” for marching band. Bands from all over the region compete and are judged on performance, precision, and musicality.

What Students Do:

  • Travel as a group (on school buses)
  • Perform their full competitive field show
  • Participate in warm-ups, equipment loading, and awards ceremonies
  • Remain in uniform or designated attire all day
  • Need money for snacks, concessions, souvenirs, etc.

Parent Reminders:

  • Parent Volunteers Needed:  Bus Chaperones, Trailer Puller, Field Staff, hospitality (water/snacks)
  • Expect a full-day commitment (often 8–12+ hours)
  • Itineraries sent via BAND App for field staff the week of the event.
  • Details should be posted on BAND app a day or two prior to the competition
  • Spectator admission required ($10–$20 typically). Boosters cover admission for field staff and bus chaperones.
  • Rain or shine – competitions do not cancel for weather!
  • Bring comfortable shoes, your show shirt, cash & card for concessions, and a good bleacher seat
  • Students riding home with parents: a bus note is required. Please email to Mr. Odom the day prior to the event.

Special Events & Parades

In addition to games and competitions, your student will perform in a variety of community and showcase events such as:

  • Shrimp Festival Parade (May)
  • Friends & Family Showcase (August)
  • Community Showcase (October)
  • Lighted Christmas Parade (December)
  • MLK Day Parade (January)
  • Sugar Pointe Music Festival (April)
  • Spring Concerts & Banquet (May)

These events are more casual, but still important and exciting for both students and families. Parents are always encouraged to attend, volunteer, and cheer them on!

General Parent Tips

  • Arrive early to pick up your student after events—they’re usually released 30–45 min after return time
  • Keep track of uniform items, gloves, and shoes
  • Pack extra socks, water, snacks, and backup reeds/sticks/etc.
  • Stay connected via the BAND App—it’s our #1 communication tool
